Chicago Statement on Inerrancy

The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, drawn up in October 1978 at a summit of the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy and signed by several hundred Evangelical leaders.

In a series of articles of affirmation and denial it set out the standard definition of Biblical Inerrancy: Scripture in its original manuscripts is without error in all it affirms, while allowing for figures of speech and the conventions of its time. It answered the rise of Limited Inerrancy among evangelical scholars. The council later issued statements on interpretation (1982) and application (1986).
