Council of Nicaea

The first ecumenical council, called by Emperor Constantine at Nicaea in Asia Minor in 325 to settle the dispute over Arius.

It condemned Arianism and issued a creed declaring the Son “of the same substance” (homoousios) as the Father. It also dealt with the date of Easter and church order. Its creed, expanded at the Council of Constantinople in 381, is the basis of the Nicene Creed used by most churches today.
