Danvers Statement

A statement drafted in 1987 at a meeting in Danvers, Massachusetts, by the newly formed Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, setting out the complementarian view of men and women.

It affirms that men and women are equal in God’s image but hold distinct roles, with male headship in marriage and some governing and teaching roles in the church restricted to men. It was published in 1988. Wayne Grudem was among the council’s founders. It was written partly in response to the growth of evangelical Egalitarianism, organised the same year in Christians for Biblical Equality.
