Lambeth Conference 1998
The once-a-decade meeting of Anglican bishops from around the world, held in Canterbury in 1998, best known for Resolution I.10 on human sexuality.
The resolution upheld marriage between a man and a woman, rejected homosexual practice as incompatible with Scripture, and advised against blessing same-sex unions or ordaining those in them. It also called the church to listen to gay and lesbian people and condemned irrational fear of them. Bishops from Africa and Asia were strongly in favour.
Later actions by some provinces, such as the consecration of a partnered gay bishop in the Episcopal Church in 2003, deepened the division. Traditionalists formed GAFCON in 2008 and the Anglican Church in North America in 2009.
