Lausanne Congress

The International Congress on World Evangelization, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in July 1974 and convened by Billy Graham. It brought together Evangelical leaders from around the world, with many from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The congress issued the Lausanne Covenant, whose drafting committee was chaired by John Stott. The covenant affirmed the authority of Scripture and the priority of evangelism, and also stated that social responsibility is part of Christian duty. It gave rise to the ongoing Lausanne Movement, which held later congresses in Manila (1989) and Cape Town (2010).
