Postmillennialism
The view that Christ will return after a long era of peace and righteousness, brought about as the gospel spreads and most of the world turns to Christ.
It took clear shape among English Protestant writers around 1700 and was common among Reformed and evangelical Protestants in the 18th and 19th centuries, where it encouraged missions and social reform. It declined after the First World War, when hopes of steady progress faded and Premillennialism grew. Like Amillennialism, it places Christ’s return at the end of the millennium, but it expects that age to be a visible golden age in history.
