Armenian Apostolic

The national church of Armenia, one of the Oriental Orthodox churches, led by the Catholicos of All Armenians at Etchmiadzin.

By tradition, Gregory the Illuminator converted King Tiridates III, and Armenia adopted Christianity as its state religion c. 301, among the first kingdoms to do so. Armenia sent no delegates to the Council of Chalcedon (451), being at war with Persia that year. Armenian synods in the 6th century rejected the council, and the church holds Miaphysitism.
